Movie Tags

CAM -

A cam is a theater rip usually done with a digital video camera. A mini tripod is sometimes used, but a lot of the time this wont be possible, so the camera make shake. Also seating placement isn't always idle, and it might be filmed from an angle. If cropped properly, this is hard to tell unless there's text on the screen, but a lot of times these are left with triangular borders on the top and bottom of the screen. Sound is taken from the onboard microphone of the camera, and especially in comedies, laughter can often be heard during the film. Due to these factors picture and sound quality are usually quite poor, but sometimes we're lucky, and the theater will be fairly empty and a fairly clear signal will be heard.

TELESYNC (TS) - 

A telesync is the same spec as a CAM except it uses an external audio source (most likely an audio jack in the chair for hard of hearing people). A direct audio source does not ensure a good quality audio source, as a lot of background noise can interfere. A lot of the times a telesync is filmed in an empty cinema or from the projection booth with a professional camera, giving a better picture quality. Quality ranges drastically, check the sample before downloading the full release. A high percentage of Telesyncs are CAMs that have been mislabeled.



TELECINE (TC) -

A telecine machine copies the film digitally from the reels. Sound and picture should be very good, but due to the equipment involved and cost telecines are fairly uncommon. Generally the film will be in correct aspect ratio, although 4:3 telecines have existed. A great example is the JURASSIC PARK 3 TC done last year. TC should not be confused with TimeCode , which is a visible counter on screen throughout the film.

SCREENER (SCR) -

A pre VHS tape, sent to rental stores, and various other places for promotional use. A screener is supplied on a VHS tape, and is usually in a 4:3 (full screen) a/r, although letterboxed screeners are sometimes found. The main draw back is a "ticker" (a message that scrolls past at the bottom of the screen, with the copyright and anti-copy telephone number). Also, if the tape contains any serial numbers, or any other markings that could lead to the source of the tape, these will have to be blocked, usually with a black mark over the section. This is sometimes only for a few seconds, but unfortunately on some copies this will last for the entire film, and some can be quite big. Depending on the equipment used, screener quality can range from excellent if done from a MASTER copy, to very poor if done on an old VHS recorder thru poor capture equipment on a copied tape. Most screeners are transferred to VCD, but a few attempts at SVCD have occurred, some looking better than others.

DVD-SCREENER (DVDscr) -

Same premise as a screener, but transferred off a DVD. Usually letterbox , but without the extras that a DVD retail would contain. The ticker is not usually in the black bars, and will disrupt the viewing. If the ripper has any skill, a DVDscr should be very good. Usually transferred to SVCD or DivX/XviD.

DVDRip - 

A copy of the final released DVD. If possible this is released PRE retail (for example, Star Wars episode 2) again, should be excellent quality. DVDrips are released in SVCD and DivX/XviD.

VHSRip -

Transferred off a retail VHS, mainly skating/sports videos and XXX releases.

TVRip -

TV episode that is either from Network (capped using digital cable/satellite boxes are preferable) or PRE-AIR from satellite feeds sending the program around to networks a few days earlier (do not contain "dogs" but sometimes have flickers etc) Some programs such as WWF Raw Is War contain extra parts, and the "dark matches" and camera/commentary tests are included on the rips. PDTV is capped from a digital TV PCI card, generally giving the best results, and groups tend to release in SVCD for these. VCD/SVCD/DivX/XviD rips are all supported by the TV scene.

WORKPRINT (WP) -

A workprint is a copy of the film that has not been finished. It can be missing scenes, music, and quality can range from excellent to very poor. Some WPs are very different from the final print (Men In Black is missing all the aliens, and has actors in their places) and others can contain extra scenes (Jay and Silent Bob) . WPs can be nice additions to the collection once a good quality final has been obtained.

DivX Re-Enc -

A DivX re-enc is a film that has been taken from its original VCD source, and re-encoded into a small DivX file. Most commonly found on file sharers, these are usually labeled something like Film.Name.Group(1of2) etc. Common groups are SMR and TND. These aren't really worth downloading, unless you're that unsure about a film u only want a 200mb copy of it. Generally avoid.

ANSI.SYS key-remapping commands consist of

Back Door =
Something a hacker leaves behind on a system
in order to be able to get back in at a later
time.
Binary =
A numbering system in which there are only two
possible values for each digit: 0 and 1.

Blue Hat =
A blue hat hacker is someone outside computer

Buffer Overflow =
A classic exploit that sends more data than a
programmer expects to receive. Buffer overflows
are one of the most common programming
errors, and the ones most likely to slip through
quality assurance testing.
Cracker =
A specific type of hacker who decrypts
passwords or breaks software copy protection
schemes.
DDoS =
Distributed denial of service. Flooding someones
connection with packets. Servers or web-hosted
shells can send packets to a connection on a
website usually from a booter.
Deface =
A website deface is an attack on a site that
changes the appearance of the site or a certain
webpage on the site.
Dictionary Attack =
A dictionary attack is an attack in which a
cyber criminal can attempt to gain your account
password. The attack uses a dictionary file, a
simple list of possible passwords, and a
program which fills them in. The program just
fills in every single possible password on the
list, untill it has found the correct one.
Dictionary files usually contain the most
common used passwords.
DOX =
Personal information about someone on the
Internet usualy contains real name, address,
phone number, SSN, credit card number, etc.

A person who manipulates other people to
believe that he/she is a beautiful girl doing cam
shows or selling sexual pictures to make
money.
Encryption = 
In cryptography, encryption applies
mathematical operations to data in order to
render it incomprehensible. The only way to
read the data is apply the reverse mathematical
operations. In technical speak, encryption is
applies mathematical algorithms with a key
that converts plaintext to ciphertext. Only

Exploit =
A way of breaking into a system. An exploit

A grey hat hacker is a combination of a Black
Hat and a White Hat Hacker. A Grey Hat Hacker
may surf the internet and hack into a computer
system for the sole purpose of notifying the

hacked, for example. Then they may offer to
repair their system for a small fee.

Data that is sent across the Internet is broken

Phone Freaks. Hackers who hack cell phones for
free calling. Free Long distance calling. Etc.
Phreaking =
The art and science of cracking the phone
network.
Proxy =
A proxy is something that acts as a server, but
when given requests from clients, acts itself as
a client to the real servers.
Rainbow Table =
A rainbow table is a table of possible
passwords and their hashes. It is way faster to
crack a password using rainbow tables then
using a dictionary attack (Bruteforce).
Remote Administration Tool =
A tool which is used to remotely control
(an)other machine(s). These can be used for
monitoring user actions, but often misused by
cyber criminals as malware, to get their hands
on valuable information, such as log in
credentials.
Resolver =
Software created to get an IP address through
IM (instant messenger, like Skype/MSN)
programs.
Reverse Engineering =
A technique whereby the hacker attempts to
discover secrets about a program. Often used
by crackers, and in direct modifications to a
process/application.
Root =
Highest permission level on a computer, able to
modify anything on the system without
restriction.
Rootkit (ring3 ring0) =
A powerful exploit used by malware to conceal
all traces that it exists. Ring3 - Can be
removed easily without booting in safemode.
Ring0 - Very hard to remove and very rare in
the wild, these can require you to format, it's

without safemode.
Script Kiddie =
A script kid, or skid is a term used to describe
those who use scripts created by others to hack
computer systems and websites. Used as an
insult, meaning that they know nothing about
hacking.
Shell =
The common meaning here is a hacked web
server with a DoS script uploaded to conduct
DDoS attacks via a booter. OR A shell is an
script-executing unit - Something you'd stick
somewhere in order to execute commands of
your choice.
Social Engineer =
Social engineering is a form of hacking that
targets people's minds rather than their
computers. A typical example is sending out
snail mail marketing materials with the words
"You may already have won" emblazoned
across the outside of the letter. As you can see,
social engineering is not unique to hackers; it's
main practitioners are the marketing
departments of corporations.
Spoof =
The word spoof generally means the act of
forging your identity. More specifically, it refers
to forging the sender's IP address (IP spoofing).
(Spoofing an extension for a RAT to change it
from .exe to .jpg, etc.)
SQL Injection =
An SQL injection is a method often used to
hack SQL databases via a website, and gain
admin control (sometimes) of the site. You can
attack programs with SQLi too.
Trojan =
A Trojan is a type of malware that masquerades
as a legitimate file or helpful program with the
ultimate purpose of granting a hacker
unauthorized access to a computer.
VPS =
The term is used for emphasizing that the
virtual machine, although running in software
on the same physical computer as other
customers' virtual machines, is in many
respects functionally
equivalent to a separate physical computer, is
dedicated to the individual customer's needs,
has the privacy of a separate physical
computer, and can be configured to run server
software.

A "white hat" refers to an ethical hacker, or a
computer security expert, who specializes in
penetration testing and in other testing methods

Worm =
Software designed to spread malware with little
to no human interaction.
Zero Day Exploit =
An attack that exploits a previously unknown
vulnerability in a computer application, meaning
that the attack occurs on "day zero" of
awareness of the vulnerability. This means that
the developers have had zero days to address
and patch the vulnerability.

What is NAS ?

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS not only operates as a file server, but is specialized for this task either by its hardware, software, or configuration of those elements. NAS is often manufactured as a computer appliance – a specialized computer built from the ground up for storing and serving files – rather than simply a general purpose computer being used for the role.

NAS is useful for more than just general centralized storage provided to client computers in environments with large amounts of data. NAS can enable simpler and lower cost systems such as load-balancing and fault-tolerant email and web server systems by providing storage services. The potential emerging market for NAS is the consumer market where there is a large amount of multi-media data. Such consumer market appliances are now commonly available. Unlike their rackmounted counterparts, they are generally packaged in smaller form factors. The price of NAS appliances has plummeted in recent years, offering flexible network-based storage to the home consumer market for little more than the cost of a regular USB or FireWire external hard disk. Difference between 2nd and 3rd Generation core processor

As a manufacturer, Intel has committed to switching things up every generation of its cpu chips. They alternate between an architecture change and a die shrink with each other generation. 



The 2nd generation of Core i-series processors was dubbed "Sandy Bridge" and was an architecture change from the previous CPUs.

The 3rd generation is called "Ivy Bridge," and is basically a copy of Sandy Bridge manufactured on a smaller scale, or die. However, Intel also focused on beefing up the integrated graphics in this generation.

Basically, 3rd generation "Ivy Bridge" CPUs have a small (5-10%) performance advantage over 2nd generation Sandy Bridge chips, however they also produce higher temperatures when overclocked which means it is harder to push them further in speed. Basically they even out when compared to Sandy Bridge's performance+overclocking.

However, the Ivy Bridge CPUs also use less power and have a more powerful graphics chip built in.

Symptoms of Computer Virus

Viruses and Spyware are pretty much the worst hassles to deal with when it comes to computers. A small price, for revolutionizing every aspect of our lives, businesses and day to day tasks making things a lot more efficient and productive. However, this one issue has proved to cost companies and individuals a fortune every year.



1. Computer Performance Degrades

If you notice your computer performing degrade with time, it is probably a virus issue, as viruses accumulate they drain CPU resources and tie up your usual tasks resulting in your computer running a lot slower. If it’s been a low performing computer ever since you remember though I think it’s time for a hardware upgrade.

2. Takes forever to startup

If you notice your computer taking forever to startup without any significant modifications to your system (installing a CPU heavy application like an antivirus is a significant modification) it’s probably because your malware are starting up too. One way to check this is to open Start > Run > “Msconfig”>Startup and check the applications on startup, if you notice anything you don’t recognize in the list, it could be malware, however you can’t be too sure as it could be a third party process of a trusted installed application.

3. Toolbars and Tray Icons out of nowhere

This could be either a virus or spyware, usually malware toolbars installed are usually spyware, installed into the browser to track user browsing habits and information. Tray icons, which is again malware (as it was installed without the user’s consent) could be viruses or spyware, they could be harmless, meant to drain your computer off its resources or spyware to track your usage again.

4. Your computer is infected!

This is another common form of tricking the user to install a malicious software tool. Usually, a malicious script is installed into your system or hijacks your browser (another form of spyware) and continually prompts the user that the computer is infected and needs to be scanned for issues, users who are tricked by this message, install the apparent anti malware tool which in itself is a virus.

5. Your browser keeps crashing and/or you get a new home page

This is a definite case of spyware, where the browser is hijacked and results in your browser crashing and your home page being modified to a malicious website as well.

6. You can’t access your task manager

This is typical of a virus, the virus while creating a background process to exploit the victim’s computer, disables the task manager as well via a registry key so that the running virus process cannot be ended. This can be fixed using Disk Heal if the virus is no longer active.

7. You can’t access your folder options or the preferences are read only.

The Folder Options (My Computer > Tools > Folder Options) controls numerous functions on the windows operating system. One of the main functions controlled is whether files given the ‘hidden’ or ‘system’ attribute should be displayed in your file explorer/My Computer. Viruses usually sit somewhere in the hard disk with these attributes appended to them to prevent the user finding them, therefore it also disables the Folder Options or makes its preferences ‘read only’ where when preferences are changed and applied, you’ll notice them revert to the previous settings right away. This can be fixed using Disk Heal if the virus is no longer active.

8. You can’t access the Windows Registry Editor

The windows registry editor (Start > Run > “Regedit” ) is your system’s ‘headquarters’. This is where most of your operating system and application software preferences are stored. Viruses after penetrating into a system, usually disable the registry editor to prevent system administrators manually reverting settings like the previous two points. This can be fixed using Disk Heal if the virus is no longer active.

9. Your CPU Usage is 100% all the time.

Open the task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del / Ctrl + Shift + Esc). If it’s disabled, you have your answer, you have a virus (unless you are not the admin of the computer and the administrator has disabled this feature). If you notice the CPU usage is 100%, arrange the processes by by CPU usage and check the process taking up the bulk, if it has a weird name (you should be able to figure or else leave a comment below) chances are it’s a virus.

10. Autorun.inf in your local or external drive

Take the letters of the active drives in your computer now, replace it in the letter field in the following location and open it in the My Computer address bar: “[letter]:/autorun.inf”, if it opens a notepad file with a reference to an EXE or any unidentified file it is probably another sign of a virus, unless that drive has a designated autorun program on startup however this is unlikely on local or even external hard drives unless manually done.

So there you have it, these are 10 of the most popular ways to know if your computer is infected by a virus, of course there are plenty of other symptoms to determine if your computer is infected and also the above factors may not necessarily mean you could be infected, but if you find more than a couple of the above familiar maybe, you should be looking to switch to a better antivirus and antispyware or get a new one if you don’t use them.

I’ve tried several antivirus and antispyware programs and concluded that Kaspersky andAd Aware are the best in the market. I’m currently another two similar products as well, await the reviews of them

Retina Display

Retina Display is a brand name used by Apple for liquid crystal displays which they claim have a high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance. The term is used for several Apple products, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and MacBook Pro. As the typical viewing distance would be different depending on each device's usage, the pixels per inch claimed as retina quality can be different for the smallest devices (326, iPhone and iPod Touch): greater than the mid-sized devices (264, iPad) and greater than the larger devices (220, MacBook Pro).

The displays are manufactured by different suppliers. Currently, the iPad's display comes from the same suppliers Samsung use while the Macbook Pro displays are mostly made by LG's suppliers, along with the iPhone and iPod Touch displays. Apple has applied to register the term "Retina" as a trademark in regard to computers and mobile devices with theUnited States Patent and Trademark Office, Canadian Intellectual Property Office, and in Jamaica.

Blue Screen of Death

The Blue Screen of Death (also known as BSoD, Blue Screen Error, or Bluescreen), known officially as a Stop Error or a bug check, is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to crash. The term is named after the color of the screen generated by the error. In Unix-based operating systems, a similar term is kernel panic.

Stop errors are hardware, updates and driver related, causing the computer to stop responding in order to prevent damage to the hardware or data. In the later versions of Windows (Windows NT and later) the screen presents information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check.

A new version of the error screen has been seen in Windows 8, released in 2012. Rather than displaying detailed technical information about the error, it simply displays a short explanation that the system needs to restart, the technical name of the error and a sad emoticon. It also contains a lighter shade of blue in the background. Technology news website Tech Crunch described the revised BSoD as 'a step in the right direction,' stating that the information provided on previous versions was unintelligible to most Windows users.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) is an American multinational semiconductor chip maker corporation headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Intel is the world's largest and highest valued semiconductor chip maker, based on revenue. It is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors, the processors found in most personal computers. Intel Corporation, founded on July 18, 1968, is a portmanteau of Integrated Electronics (the fact that "intel" is the term for intelligence information was also quite suitable). Intel also makes motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphic chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing. Founded by semiconductor pioneers Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore and widely associated with the executive leadership and vision of Andrew Grove, Intel combines advanced chip design capability with a leading-edge manufacturing capability. Though Intel was originally known primarily to engineers and technologists, its "Intel Inside" advertising campaign of the 1990s made it and its Pentium processor household names.

In 2011, Intel Capital announced a new fund to support startups working on technologies in line with the company's concept for next generation notebooks. The company is setting aside a $300 million fund to be spent over the next three to four years in areas related to ultrabooks. Intel announced the ultrabook concept at Computex in 2011. The ultrabook will be a thin (less than 0.8 inches thick) notebook that utilizes Intel processors and also incorporates tablet features such as a touch screen and long battery life.

At the Intel Developers Forum in 2011, four Taiwain ODMs showed prototype ultrabooks that used Intel's Ivy Bridge chips. Intel plans to improve power consumption of its chips for ultrabooks, like Ivy Bridge processors, which will only have 77W default thermal design power.

Intel's goal for Ultrabook's price is below $1000; however, according to two presidents from Acer and Compaq, this goal will not be achieved if Intel does not lower the price of its chips.

What are DNS Changer Viruses?

DNS (Domain Name System) is an Internet service that converts user-friendly domain names into the numerical Internet protocol (IP) addresses that computers use to talk to each other. For example, google.com is actually an IP address (173.194.38.164). DNS makes it easier for us to remember the site names. DNS servers convert the domain names into IP addresses.

Now the malware, changes the domain naming servers in your computer and uses a different malicious DNS server. This malicious DNS server, swaps IP's and takes the user to a fake site.


Now if you log in to any of your accounts in the fake site, then your log in information is compromised. That's how the malware steals Credit Card details from the user.

FBI Process to stop DNS Changer : 

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is on the final stage of its Operation Ghost Click, which strikes against the menace of the DNSChanger virus and trojan. Infected PCs running the DNSChanger malware at unawares are in the danger of going offline on this coming Monday (July 9) when the FBI plans to pull down the online servers that communicate with the virus on host computers.

After gaining access to a host PC, the DNSChanger virus tries to modify the DNS (Domain Name Server) settings, which are essential for Internet access, to send traffic to malicious servers. These poisoned web addresses in turn point traffic generated through infected PCs to fake or unsafe websites, most of them running online scams. There are also reports that the DNSChanger virus also acts as a trojan, allowing perpetrators of the hack attack to gain access to infected PCs.

Google issued a general advisory for netizens in May earlier this year to detect and remove DNSChanger from infected PCs. According to our report, some 5 lakh PCs were still infected by the DNSChanger virus in May 2012.

The first report of the DNSChanger virus and its affiliation with an international group of hackers first came to light towards the end of last year, and the FBI has been chasing them down ever since. The group behind the DNSChanger virus is estimated to have infected close to 4 million PCs around the world in 2011, until the FBI shut them down in November.

In the last stage of Operation Ghost Click, the FBI plans to pull the plug and bring down the temporary rogue DNS servers on Monday, July 9, according to an official announcement. As a result, PCs still infected by the DNSChanger virus will be unable to access the Internet.

IPv6

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is a version of the Internet Protocol (IP) that is intended to succeed IPv4, which is the communications protocol currently used to direct almost all Internet traffic. IPv6 will allow the Internet to support many more devices by greatly increasing the number of possible addresses.

IPv6, like the most-comonly-used IPv4 (as of 2012), is an Internet-layer protocol for packet-switched internetworking and provides end-to-end datagram transmission across multiple IP networks. It is described in Internet standard document RFC 2460, published in December 1998. In addition to offering more addresses, IPv6 also implements features not present in IPv4. It simplifies aspects of address assignment (stateless address autoconfiguration), network renumbering and router announcements when changing network connectivity providers. The IPv6 subnet size has been standardized by fixing the size of the host identifier portion of an address to 64 bits to facilitate an automatic mechanism for forming the host identifier from link-layer media addressing information (MAC address). Network security is also integrated into the design of the IPv6 architecture, including the option of IPsec.

Compared to IPv4, the most obvious advantage of IPv6 is its larger address space. IPv4 addresses are 32 bits long and number about 4.3×109 (4.3 billion). IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long and number about 3.4×1038. IPv6's addresses are deemed enough for the foreseeable future.
IPv6 addresses are written in eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, such as 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. IPv6 unicast addresses other than those that start with binary 000 are logically divided into two parts: a 64-bit (sub-)network prefix, and a 64-bit interface identifier.

5D Cinema

A little while ago, Neeraj baited me into visiting the newly opened “shopping paradise” Sihlcity, by inviting me to a 5D cinema screening. That sounded like a worthwhile experience, so I bit the bullet and agreed to accompany her to the mall for a few hours before I finally got to sit down in a cinema chair.


Five-dimensional cinema combines the revival of the 3D glasses with moving seats and a combination of scents, wind, and water vapour sprayed into your face.

The scents were definitely interesting, especially given the animal animation movie we watched, which would present us with the olefactory sensation of e.g. a rhino’s behind. Lovely, can you imagine? Also, wind and water vapour were interesting additions, although they seemed too forced every time.

Then there were the moving chairs: when you have ice bears sliding through caves in much the way it happened in Ice Age 2, you’d assume the chairs to sway around; instead, they bounced back and forth and shaking you hard every time they reached the opposite position. It was as if the movie makers wanted to ensure that you don’t even think about getting comfortable.

The worst aspect of the whole joke was that we got a whoppin’ 15 minutes of movie and 10 minutes of a ridiculously stupid quiz show and I did actually like the 3D animation on screen and the scents, so it was not too much of an issue to fade out the rocking chairs. But it just stopped. What an amazing rip-off.

Never shall I have to go experience this crap again.

Windows 8 Store vs Apple Store

Windows 8 Store :-
When Windows 8 ships this fall, it will represent both the next iteration of Windows on the desktop and Microsoft's answer to Apple's dominance of the tablet market. As the Metro interface replaces much of what we're used to in Windows, the Windows Store will be the place where users go to install Metro apps both on the desktop and tablet. Basically, it's important for Microsoft to get it right.
We can already access the store in both the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 that came out several months ago and the more advanced Release Preview that came out yesterday. There aren't many apps in it just yet, and there's little sense in harping on that point as the number and quality will surely increase dramatically when Windows 8 hits final form.
But the interface in which users discover and search for apps is far enough along to compare to the store's big rivals: the Mac App Store and the iOS App Store. While using the Windows Store is easy enough, its current state doesn't match the usability and discoverability of Apple's App Stores.
The Windows Store's front page is pretty spartan, showing a few featured apps and categories like "new releases" and "top free" apps:

The iPad App Store is a bit less busy, but still provides more options on its front page than Microsoft's store for both tablets and PCs. Both the Mac and iPad App Stores feature a visible search box on their front pages, and a link to your installed and purchased applications. These tools are also present in the Microsoft store, but only after performing the right gestures or clicks.

Windows 8 is the next generation of Microsoft windows. It has new features which are described as follows:-

Performance Increases

One of the issues that's been on our minds since they previewed this new interface was whether this will keep bogging Windows down with more running processes, and whether running a full Windows desktop on a low-powered tablet was really a good idea (after all, we've seen Windows run on netbooks).
Microsoft knows your fears, and has addressed them: Windows 8 is slated to have better performance than Windows 7, even with this metro interface running on top of a desktop. We ran a few tests back when the the Developer Preview came out and found that to be the case, especially when it comes to boot times. Tablet users and netbook users especially should notice a fairly significant performance increase with Windows 8. Especially considering that any of your tablet-based apps will suspend themselves when you jump into the traditional desktop, so they don't take up any of your resources.

The Lock Screen

Windows 8's lock screen is pretty much what you'd expect: it's got a beautiful picture along with a few little widgets full of information, like the time, how many emails you have, and so on. However, after swiping to unlock, Windows 8 shows off some pretty neat touch-based features, particularly a "picture password" feature. Instead of using a PIN or a lock pattern to get into your system, you swipe invisible gestures using a picture to orient yourself (in the example they showed, the password was to tap on a persons nose and swipe left across their arm). Android modders might find this similar to CyanogenMod's lock screen gestures.

The Home Screen

The home screen is very familiar to anyone who's used Windows Phone. You've got a set of tiles, each of which represents an application, and many of which show information and notifications that correspond to the app. For example, your email tile will tell you how many unread emails you have (and who they're from), your calendar tile will show upcoming events, your music tile will show you what's playing, and so on. You can also create tiles for games, contacts, and even traditional Windows apps that will pull you into the Windows desktop. The tablet-optimized apps are all full screen and "immersive", though, and you can rearrange their icons on the home screen easily (just as you would on any other tablet platform).

Running Apps



First Look at What's New in Windows 8

Running a basic app works as you expect—you tap on its home screen icon and it goes full screen. The browser has lots of touch-based controls, like pinch to zoom and copy and paste, and you can access options like search, share, and settings through the Charms bar, which you can get by swiping from the right edge of the screen or pressing Win+C. Apps can share information one another easily, such as selected text or photos. After picking your media from one app, you'll then be able to choose which app you want to share with, and work with it from there. For example, you can share photos to Facebook, send text from a web page in an email, and so on.
None of this is brand new to touch-based platforms, but what is new is the ability to not only multitask, but run these apps side by side. Say you want to watch a video and keep an eye on your news feed at the same time. Just like in Windows 7 for the desktop, you can dock an app to one side of the screen while docking another app at the opposite side, which is a seriously cool feature. Imagine being able to IM and play a game at the same time, or browse the web while writing an email. It's a fantastic way to fix one of the big shortcomings of mobile OSes, thus allowing you to ignore the full desktop interface more often and stay in the touch-friendly, tablet view.

The Windows Store

The Windows Store, which is now available in the Consumer Preview, looks much like the home screen, with tiles that correspond to different categories and featured apps. From there, you can look at a more detailed list of the available apps in a given section. And, the store contains not only touch-based apps for the tablet interface, but some of the more traditional desktop Windows apps you're used to, so you have one portal to discover all your Windows apps no matter what interface you're using.
Right now, the Windows Store is full of free apps from Microsoft and its partners, so you can check out some of the upcoming apps now. When Windows 8 officially releases to the public, though, you should find many more apps in the store, including paid ones. What's really cool about the app store is that you can try apps before you buy, and then download the full version without losing your place in the app or reinstalling anything.

Sync All Your Data to the Cloud


First Look at What's New in Windows 8

The cloud is taking center stage, with your Microsoft account driving all the syncing in Windows 8. Your address book, photos, SkyDrive data, and even data within third-party apps can sync up to the cloud, and you can access them on any Windows 8 device—even a brand new one. Just sign in, and you'll have access to everything (not unlike Chrome OS, which immediately loaded your themes and extensions when you logged in—great for lending your computer to a friend). The address book also syncs with other services like Facebook and Twitter as well. You can even sync all of your settings from one Windows 8 PC to another. Just sign onto your Windows 8 with a Microsoft account and you'll get all your themes, languages, app settings, taskbar, and other preferences will show right up. It's a pretty neat feature if you have multiple Windows 8 PCs and don't want to set them all up separately—just a few taps and you've got all your preferences ready to go.

The Desktop

The traditional desktop is still there, though it may be a tad different than what you're used to. First and foremost, there's no start button to speak of. Your taskbar merely shows the apps you have pinned, with your system tray on the right, as usual. You can jump back to the start screen (that is, the Metro screen) by pressing the Windows key or by moving your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen. Other than that, everything looks pretty similar (though the windows no longer have rounded corners). The Control Panel has been updated a bit, as well as the Task Manager and Windows Explorer, which we'll discuss below.

A New Task Manager

Microsoft's finally redesigned the task manager, and it looks pretty great. You have a very simple task manager for basic task killing, but if you're a more advanced user, you can bring up the detailed task manager filled with information on CPU and RAM usage, Metro app history, and even startup tweaking—so you can get rid of apps that launch on startup without going all the way into msconfig. Windows Explorer


First Look at What's New in Windows 8

They didn't show us a super in-depth look at the new Windows Explorer, but we did get a little peek. Most of it isn't new information: we'll have native ISO mounting in Windows Explorer, a new Office-style ribbon, and a one folder up button like the old days of XP (thank God). It also has a really cool "quick access" toolbar in the left-hand corner of the title bar, that gives you super quick access to your favorite buttons from the ribbon. Other Features


First Look at What's New in Windows 8

Along with these cool features, Windows 8 also comes with other features we've come to know and love in our mobile OSes. It's got system-wide spellchecking, so you don't have to rely on a specific app to keep your writing top-notch, as well as a system-wide search feature, that lets you search anything from your music library to your contacts to the web itself. It also has a really cool feature for desktop users that lets your run the Metro UI on one monitor while running the traditional desktop on the other.
It also has a really cool feature called "refresh your PC", where you can do a clean install with the tap of a button. Whether you're selling your machine or just want a cleaner, faster installation of Windows, you can do it all in one click. You can even set refresh points, similar to restore points, so you can refresh your PC to the way it was at a certain point in time.
