Restrict User Logon Hours

>>To restrict a users logon hours , use the net user command. These commands are used from the Command Prompt. (Start - RUN - and type cmd)

Below are some examples:

1 - net user Manish /time:M-F,08:00-17:00

2 - net user Mohit /time:M-F,8am-5pm

3 - net user Jaikishan /time:M,4am-5pm;T,1pm-3pm;W-F,8:00-17:00

4 - net user Ishwar /time:all (this one means this user can always log on)

Note: You can only restrict when a user can log on to the system. On a stand alone computer, there is no way to force a user to log off when their hours expire, without a third party script or software.

Set Picture Password in Windows 8

Windows 8 introduce a new security feature, picture password. While you can continue to use a numeric combination as your password, you can enable the security feature if you have a touch enabled device and experience the new way of logging into your Windows 8 device.

1. Move your mouse cursor to the upper left corner to show the Search and Settings panel. Click on More PC Settings, and select Users.

2. Click on Create a Picture Password, Confirm with your local account or Windows Account password.

3. Click the Choose picture button. Select the picture you want to use. Note: these pictures are stored in the Pictures folder of your local account.

4. You can drag the picture an move it around to display the way you like, and click the Use this picture button. Draw three gestures and repeat to confirm. The three gestures are a combination of circles, straight lines and taps. You can repeat the process by clicking the Start Over button until you are satisfied with the gesture combination or until you are done correctly.

5. When you log in next time, you will be able to use either your standard password or the newly created picture password. You can easily remove the picture password from the User settings if you want to.

Notes:

If you use the picture password and you know you did something wrong, you can press the Start Over button and start again. If you don’t get the gestures right five times in a row, Windows 8 automatically switch back to the alphanumeric password option before you get frustrated. I haven’t noticed any logon delays due to repeating attempts with incorrect gestures.

With the alphanumeric password option, you are reminded with your password hit and the password reset option after the first attempt. After five attempts, you will have to wait for a long while (about 30 seconds or longer) before next attempt. This deliberate delay is a Windows security feature that is designed to prevent hackers from keeping guessing your user name and password.

Restrict Drives in Windows 7

IF you want no one to open a drive without your permission, it is possible in Windows 7 ultimate/premium.

>>To block access to drive go to Computer and right click on the drive and select properties.
>>In the properties window click on ‘Security’ tab. Select the user account you want to restrict and click on edit.
>>Change the permissions according to your need for user groups or a particular user and click Apply and then OK. It will not work for users with admin account as even they have the same rights as you so they can revert all permissions. You will need an admin account to perform this task.

NOTE:This trick is for Windows 7 ultimate and premium edition users only

BitLocker Drive Encryption

Bitlocker Drive Encryption helps prevent unauthorised access to any files stored on the drives. You are able to use computer normally, but unauthorised users cannot read or use your files.

You can use BitLocker Drive Encryption to help protect all files stored on the drive Windows is installed on (operating system drive) and on fixed data drives (such as internal hard drives). Your can use BitLocker To Go to help protect all files stored on removable data drives (such as external hard drives or USB flash drives).

Unlike Encrypting File System (EFS), which enables you to encrypt individual files, BitLocker encrypts the entire drive. You can log on and work with your files normally, but BitLocker can help block hackers from accessing the system files they rely on to discover your password, or from accessing your drive by removing it from your computer and installing it in a different computer.

When you add new files to a drive that is encrypted with BitLocker, BitLocker encrypts them automatically. Files remain encrypted only while they are stored in the encrypted drive. Files copied to another drive or computer are decrypted. If you share files with other users, such as through a network, these files are encrypted while stored on the encrypted drive, but they can be accessed normally by authorized users.

If you encrypt the operating system drive, BitLocker checks the computer during startup for any conditions that could represent a security risk (for example, a change to the BIOS or changes to any startup files). If a potential security risk is detected, BitLocker will lock the operating system drive and require a special BitLocker recovery key to unlock it. Make sure that you create this recovery key when you turn on BitLocker for the first time; otherwise, you could permanently lose access to your files. If your computer has the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, BitLocker uses it to seal the keys that are used to unlock the encrypted operating system drive. When you start your computer, BitLocker asks the TPM for the keys to the drive and unlocks it.

If you encrypt data drives (fixed or removable), you can unlock an encrypted drive with a password or a smart card, or set the drive to automatically unlock when you log on to the computer.

You can turn off BitLocker at any time, either temporarily by suspending it, or permanently by decrypting the drive.

To Turn On Bitlocker:

1.  Goto Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption

2.  Click on Turn On BitLocker on Selected Drive

3.  Select 'Use a Password to unlock this drive'.

4.  Enter the Password you want and Click Next.

5.  Save the recovery key and click Next.

6.  Now, Bit Locker will Encrypt the Drive.

7.  To Turn off BitLocker, click on Turn off BitLocker

Note: Windows 7 with TPM is must for Bitlocker
